Report on the summerschool ‘Waterscapes in Transformation’

On Thursday, 6 September 2018 the final presentations of the summerschool ‘Waterscapes in Transformation‘ were held in Blankenberge. During the ten day summerschool, students from 4 different universities (KUL, ETSAB, Minho and ITÜ) were confronted with a waterscape in transformation (de Uitkerkse Polder) and challenged to take position. In different working groups three existing coastal defence principles (Protect – Accommodate – Retreat) were projected to the future horizon of 2100. For each scenario a design intervention was created on seven crucial locations in the Uitkerkse Polder. There was a local coorporation with the City of Blankenberge and Natuurpunt. This summerschool was held in the context of my PhD ‘Waterscapes in Transformation, insights on landscape accessibility challenged by new infrastructures for climate resilience: the case of the Belgian Coastal Zone’. – Sis Pillen
