Opening exhibition: Drawing Ambience. Alvin Boyarsky and the Architectural Association 24/10

Drawing Ambience showcases architectural drawings from the private collection of the remarkable educationalist Alvin Boyarsky, which includes drawings from Rem Koolhaas, Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind and Bernard Tschumi.
As an architect, tutor and critic, Alvin Boyarsky (1928-1990) argued for new models in education and in design practice, which were always linked to global cultural changes. He was chairman of the Architectural Association (AA), a platform for young architects to explore the challenges of the day and define their own visual and spatial languages.
The curators of this Antwerp edition are Riet Eeckhout and Arnaud Hendrickx, working together with the Flanders Architecture Institute.
Various artist-architects have been asked to participate in the exhibition either by commenting, discussing or giving a critique of one of the drawings. Koen Deprez‘ starting point is the master plan for the Parc La Villette (Office for Metropolitan Architecture/Rem Koolhaas) that he contrasts with a master outlook he made for the urban-redevelopment competition for the reconversion of the coal mine in Winterslag (see also the publication The Copy).

On Tuesday 24 October 2017 at 8pm Sir Peter Cook and Alexander Brodsky will open the exhibition with a reflection on the role of drawing in their practice.
