Iwo Borkowicz, graduate of the Faculty of Architecture, is one the three winners of the first edition of the Young Talent Architecture Award (YTAA). Iwo graduated last year at Campus Sint-Lucas Ghent in the English Master of Architecture.

At the faculty he was already selected as a laureate (the graduating student with the best results in the program). On top he was chosen by the dean, vice deans and program director to participate in two international competitions: the European Architecture Medals (EAM) and the Young Talent Architecture Award. The EAM-competition is still running at this moment. But recently Iwo was celebrated on the YTAA-ceremony as one of the three winners.

The YTAA is an extension of the Europian Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award and is presented by the Fundaciùo Mies van der Rohe with support of Creative Europe. The YTAA aims to support the talent of recently graduated architects, urban planners and landscape architects. They are the future, as such they can use some support for the development of their network.

Under which circumstances can mass tourism exist in the historic district of Old-Havana without being a threat for the habitants? How can Cuba deal with the housing shortage and the poverty? Some questions Iwo was asking in his winning project “A Symbiotic Relation of Cooperative Social Housing and Dispersed Tourism in Havana Vieja”. Iwo went to Cuba himself to investigate the matter, with the support of a VLIR-UOS grant. In Havana he experienced how increasing poverty and luxury tourism are interconnected with each other. As a solution to this urban problems he developed an architectural prototype that combines small-scale tourism, social housing and productive activities in the streetscape of Havana.

Iwo is as a winner by the YTAA-organisation supported to develop a network of architects and criticists evolved in the EU Mies Award. Therefor he receives €5000, a profile in World Architecture, a Vectorworks license, his project will be shown on the EU Mies Award exhibtion and he will receive a diploma by the organization.
